Dough Bowl

A dough bowl (often referred to as a dough board in my family) was a treasured kitchen tool (especially in the South) that was used almost daily and then was passed down from one generation to another. My Maternal Grandfather, Walter Lee Judd, (1885-1950) was a hard-working man, who was employed mostly (during my lifetime) by the Southern Railroad. He was the primary hands-on person for all repairs at the "Shops" in the Somerset, Kentucky area. I have already written a short webpage relating his working life as regards his hands in the webpage Bar Soap. He was a heavy smoker who always carried a lunch box to work and who generally saved me a "treat" from his lunch box when he came home from the shops. He babied his grandchildren and was very loving and playful with us. He often would involve us with fun spelling jokes. He married my Grandmother, Nora Ann Gilliam Judd, (1884-1975) in July of 1902. For a wedding present, my Grandfather carved a dough bowl for her. It was made without the benefit of any mechanical tools - all by hand. My Grandmother used it for her food preparation and baking needs (mostly biscuits, I believe.) It was passed on to me and we still have and cherish it. We use it mostly to hold and display some of our many wooden implements (see below).
